Signs of Sexual Exploitation (Especially Minors)

Due to their extremely high level of fear and the trauma bonds many of them have established with their abusers, victims of sexual exploitation rarely say that they are being exploited or ask for help.  They will often avoid law enforcement, and since their pimps may be watching them, they usually refuse offers of help.

  1. Excess amount of cash or unidentifiable source of income
  2. Unexplained source of new clothing, jewelry, etc.
  3. Hotel room keys
  4. Chronic ditching of school, unexplained absences
  5. Chronic runaway/homelessness
  6. Isolation from family and friends
  7. Signs of branding, tattoos with male names
  8. Lying about age/false identification
  9. Inconsistencies in story
  10. Lack of knowledge of a given community or whereabouts
  11. Presence of an overly controlling and abusive “boyfriend”
  12. Inability or fear to make eye contact
  13. Paranoia, lack of trust
  14. Injuries/signs of physical abuse or malnourishment
  15. Untreated health/dental problems
  16. Restricted/scripted communication
  17. Self blame, feelings of shame and humiliation
  18. Claims of being an adult although appearance suggests adolescent features
