The Abolition Conference -- January 14
Southern Arizona's first ever regional conference on modern-day slavery was held at the UA Student Union Ballroom. Over 240 people turned out to hear from representatives of over 15 anti-trafficking organizations speak out against modern-day slavery and give a call to action. Here is what some had to say about the conference: "This conference was probably the best conference I have attended in over 20 years!", "I loved (learning about) all the ways I can be involved and make a difference.", and "It was so fantastic to hear stories about all the great things taking place all over the world...".Do You Know Lacy? Over 170 people attended this one day training sponsored by Streetlight Tucson and Shared Hope International. Represented that day were members of law enforcement, our criminal justice system, social service providers, and community advocates, all coming together to learn how domestic minor sex trafficking is affecting our city and how to be part of the solution.
Southern Arizona Human Trafficking Task Force Meetings
Thirty-seven people representing eighteen different agencies have attended our first three monthly meetings. This unprecedented collaboration includes: Tucson PD, Oro Valley PD, Marana PD, Tohono O’odham PD, ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement), FBI, U.S. Marshall, Customs Border Patrol, Pima Co Attorney’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office, AZ Attorney General’s Office, Pima Co Juvenile Court, AZ House of Representatives, Southern Arizona Against Slavery, Crisis Pregnancy Center, and Streetlight.
Speakers at the task force meetings included:
Linda Smith, former congresswoman and president of Shared Hope Intl’
Erik Breitzke, ICE Special Agent and former head of ICE’s national human smuggling and trafficking programs
Erin Otis, Dep. Maricopa County Attorney, one of the nation’s most successful prosecutors of pimps who sex-traffic girls.
Amira Birger, formerly exploited child, educates task force on how to identify victims.
